Dear Uni to Be

University of Waterloo - Computer Engineering

Here is a quick read about Waterloo's Computer Engineering program!

Hey! I'm Chris Tan and I study at the University of Waterloo studying Computer Engineering

class of 2024! If anything is a little unclear, we can always connect and discuss further.

With that out of the way, let's talk a little about the school!

PROS: Definitely a good university if you want high quality industry experience ASAP.

CONS: Doesn't really feel like a university sometimes, which sucks.

A bit about the program:

PROS: You're with the same people every class; you'll make lifelong friends, get excited!

CONS: You're with the same people every class; learn to be amicable/diplomatic with people you don't like.

A little word of advice:

For engineering in Waterloo (depends on engineering program), you are either "stream 4" or "stream 8". The number indicates the time before their first coop. Stream 4s have their first co-op in January, 4 months after school starts. Stream 8s have their first co-op in May, 8 months after school starts. It lines up with each semester. My advice for you is to get ready (especially if you're stream 4) to start being on your own; finding housing, meal prepping, getting to work, etc. Waterloo throws you into the workforce early, so it's a great/awful way to learn, depending on who you are.

Oh, and don't forget to have fun in the summer before you go into university. Seriously, you'll regret it if you don't! Cheers!
