Here's a quick read if you're interested in studying Kinesiology here!
Hey there! I'm Abigail Holmes, a first year Kinesiology at the University of Toronto (St. George Campus). If anything is unclear, or if you have any more questions then you can contact me via email at teamholmes80@gmail.com
Let's start by talking about the school:
PROS:
Downtown location, the university is surrounded by many hospitals and businesses. This is great for access to various resources, volunteer opportunities and internships.
The university has a lot of funding that goes towards research and undergrad students have the unique opportunity to pursue their own research projects.
CONS:
There are over 60,000 students who attend the St. George campus. With there being so many students, there is not a large sense of community on campus.
Many students commute, which takes away from the residence experience.
The environment is very competitive environment and many students focus on grades at an expense to their overall health.
Let's talk about the program!
PROS:
The kinesiology program is very unique as it only has 250 students. Therefore, it’s very easy to meet people and create connections with upper years as well as faculty members.
Kinesiology is it’s own faculty, meaning that there are many resources and programs dedicated solely to kinesiology students
CONS:
In 1st and 2nd year, you only get to choose one elective and the rest of your courses are mandatory. This can be a challenge as you have to take courses that you are not necessarily interested in.
Advice to my first year self
Work hard but don’t let schoolwork take over other aspects of your life
Don’t look at others for a measure for your own success.
Go to the professor’s office hours! (This really helps you establish a relationship with the prof and they can give you advice on how to succeed in their course)
What I wish I knew
Frosh week is really important and one of the best ways to make friends at UofT
The Teaching Assistant you get can determine how well you do in the class.
Doing all your readings don’t seem important until you get to the exam
Again, contact me if you have any questions! Take care!
